Solferino is a family owned and operated business. Samantha and Tony employ ~ 8-10 staff on a full- time basis, most of which have been with Solferino since Samantha and Tony purchased the property in 2019. With an inclusive and happy culture, each staff member understands their value

Employment

APPLICATIONS FOR 2025 SEASON NOW OPEN

The nature of growing cherries is seasonal, however Solferino are always on the lookout for good people whether it is in a permanent position or harvest role.

Applications for seasonal work positions open in late August, with work commencing in mid- November (weather dependent). Whilst preferred, experience is not necessary to work at Solferino Cherries.

If you are excited at the prospect of working as a team, learning a new skill and being a reliable and hard-worker for a period of 4-6 weeks, Solferino Cherries would love to hear from you.

Packhouse Team

There are a number of roles available in the packhouse which include cherry sorting, box preparation as well as logistics and palletising management roles (cool-room specific).As part of the broader packing shed team, we will also employ a team-leader who is responsible for over seeing the packing lines and communicating clearly and specifically back to the grader operator and management team in regards to any queries or issues that are being reported on the lines.The successful applicant for this role will display strong communication skills with individuals of all backgrounds, have a can-do and positive mindset and display effective problem-solving skills. The individual in this role needs to be effective at building relationships with internal and external stakeholders and have no issues clearly articulating the goal of Solferino Cherries.

Picker

Cherries are picked by hand with pickers wearing buckets. Pickers are paid on a, per lug picked basis. Systems are in place to ensure that the accurate lug weight is monitored and tracked for each individual picker. Pickers begin picking in the early hours of each morning and finish before the heat sets in for the day.

Pickers will require charged phones for each day as scanning QR codes is required to sign in for each day. This QR code also allocates the specific rows to each picker and also monitors progress throughout the day. Pickers are paid based on the reporting generated from this system, so charged
phones are critical in this role as you also are required to sign out upon the completion of each day.

As expected, cherry trees are not all the same size and shape. Ladders are often required to ensure that all fruit is picked from the tree. Being of adequate health and fitness is important as a cherry picker.

Pick-Up Crew & Driver

The pickup crew and drivers have a critically important role in following the movements of the picking teams and shifting the fruit from the orchards into the packhouse and cool-rooms as swiftly and as efficiently as possible.

To be successful in this role you need to be strong and work well as a team member. You will need to be able to effectively communicate with the pickers, the team in the packing shed and management.

Quality Control Technicians

Ensuring that Solferino Cherries strive to provide ‘Simply Superior’ fruit in each box packed, to our customers and clients is of utmost importance. Data drives the decisions that are made at Solferino, so the ability to collate and provide timely and accurate data to management on a daily basis is important. This data will be entered into excel and relied upon each day, so proficiency in
technology is desirable.

In this role you need to be able to identify and act quickly.

Terms of Employment/FAQ

General Terms

Solfarina Run has a no tolerance policy and attitude towards drugs. Solfarina Run loves welcoming all seasonal workers onto our farm over the cherry season, however\ any disrespect or interference shown to the privacy of permanent employee’s, owners or management will not be tolerated and will result in instant dismissal.

Prior to commencing work, all employees will required to provide their Tax File Number (TFN), Financial Details (Bank Details), a copy of your visa and Superannuation details in accordance with Tax Office requirements.

All seasonal workers are required to provide a mailing address (email address) that correspondencecan be sent to.

Wages

Wages will be paid each Thursday. The pay cycle (week) will commence on a Thursday and conclude on a Wednesday. Payment will be processed and received into your nominated account on the Thursday.

Lugs picked will be tracked utilising our in-orchard Dataphyll system so discrepancies in payment should not arise. On the odd occasion that you believe there is a discrepancy you will be required to see Matilda Flanery or Kris Pointer to discuss. These queries will take place after 5pm.

Work Hours

Work Hours will vary depending on the weather. Picking hours may commence as early as 4am. Picking for the day concludes prior to the heat setting in for the day.

First bin in the packing shed will be tipped at 7am. As such all lines need to be set, cool rooms set up for the consignment which is due to be packed, stickers printed, boxes prepared and lined with plastic and a keen eager smile ready for the day ahead. To ensure this is the case, pack shed staff are to arrive by 6:35am.

First Aid

First Aid kits are located on farm at a number of locations. These locations include the packing shed lunchroom, all farm vehicles, the orchard amenities block and the office. All accidents, injuries or illness must be reported (immediately) to the appropriate Solferino staff member.

Employees will need to notify management of any medical conditions that may put themselves or others in danger or in case of emergency.

On Farm Camping Facilities

On-Farm Camping Facilities – Solfarina Run pride themselves on providing adequate camping amenities and facilities. We expect our pickers to show care and respect for the premises.

On site, there is a kitchen, laundry and amenities facility. There are powered caravan/motor- home/campervan sites as well as powered tent sites and non-powered tent sites.

Camp rules and regulations apply. You are required to travel into Young and off-farm in your own vehicle.
